Helping survivors survive
The loss of a loved one can be painful. The death of a wage-earner also can be financially devastating. Some of the Social Security taxes you pay go toward covering your surviving family members if you were to die. Think of it as a life insurance policy you never knew you had. Ninety-eight percent of children could get benefits if a working parent died. Social Security is more than just retirement.
