In Asia
Russian jet found: The debris from a Russian Sukhoi SuperJet 100 that went missing during a demonstration flight over Indonesia last Wednesday were found on the side of a volcano. The plane crashed on a mountainous area in Jakarta. The bodies of 12 passengers on the plane were recovered. Officials have yet to determine why the plane crashed.
In Latin America
Mayan calendar: Archaeologists discovered a room amid Mayan ruins in Guatemala containing what appears to be the oldest astronomical calendar from the ancient civilization. The records are believed to be dated back to 1,200 years ago.
In North America
USPS: The U.S. Postal Service announced that it will not proceed with its plans to close post offices in rural regions of the country. Instead, the Post Office plans to cut hours, which will shift many full-time positions to part-time, and give rural communities the opportunity to decide if they would prefer to close their post office, cut hours, or create a privately run office. The Post Office looks to save half a billion dollars.
Lugar loses Senate seat: Republican Sen. Richard Lugar lost in a Republican primary against Tea Party candidate Richard Mourdock. Lugar is a six-term senator from Indiana who is considered to be a moderate Republican. He served for 36 years.
Obama on gay marriage: President Barack Obama announced he is in support of gay marriage during an interview with ABC News last Wednesday. Obama became the first sitting U.S. president to express his support for gay unions. Prior to his announcement, Vice President Joe Biden said he supported same sex marriages.
Sheriff Arpaio sued: The Justice Department launched a civil lawsuit against Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. The lawsuit alleges that, among other unlawful behavior, Arpaio and the county police force engaged in discriminatory behavior against Latinos.
G8: President Obama will host the G8 Summit at Camp David this Friday and Saturday. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he would not be in attendance during the meeting of international leaders. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will attend in his place.
In the Middle East
Terrorist plot foiled: Officials announced that the individual who was tasked with carrying out a bomb attack on a plane bound for the United States from Yemen was actually an undercover agent who infiltrated al-Qaeda. The individual presented the CIA with a sophisticated version of a similar bomb that was used in a failed bombing attempt in 2009.
Red Cross in Pakistan: The International Committee of the Red Cross announced that it will halt its humanitarian work in Pakistan after numerous attacks against its employees. It will decided if the organization will continue to work within the country.
