Colorado’s Governor

Gov. John Hickenlooper sent a letter to President Barack Obama requesting expanded disaster assistance for communities impacted by wildfires this summer. “The current disaster declaration does not account for the significant infrastructure losses and repairs the communities directly incurred as a result of these wildfires,” the letter said. “We request that you expand the current major disaster declaration to include all public assistance categories and the Last Chance Fire in Washington County and the Woodland Heights Fire in Larimer County.”

Denver’s Mayor

Mayor Michael B. Hancock announced the selection of Nicholas E. Mitchell, Esq. to be Denver’s next Independent Monitor, pending City Council confirmation. Mitchell will be responsible for actively monitoring and participating in investigations of sworn personnel in the City and County of Denver’s Police and Sheriff Departments.

Application fees waived

Denver County residents that apply for child support throughout August will have the $20 application fee paid by the Colorado Bar Association (CBA).

Both moms and dads can apply for child support from the other parent by completing an application and submitting it to the child support office. Application fees will be waived through Aug. 31 at the time the application is submitted to the Denver Child Support office located at Denver Human Services, 1200 Federal Blvd., Denver. Applications can be picked up from the office, by calling the Child Support care center at 720-944-2960 and requesting an application by mail, or by downloading it online at www.denvergov.org/childsupport.

Los residentes del Condado de Denver que soliciten la manutención de menores durante el mes de agosto tendrán el arancel de $20 de la solicitud abonado por el Colorado Bar Association (CBA).

Las solicitudes se pueden recoger en la oficina, llamando al centro de atención de Manutención de Menores al 720-944-2960 y pidiendo una solicitud por correo, o descargándola en línea desde www.denvergov.org/childsupport.

Costs of death records increase

Effective Aug. 1, the cost for death certificates will be $20 for the first copy and $13 for additional copies of the same record ordered at the same time. This is an increase from $17 for the first copy and $10 for additional copies.

The change is a result of HB 12-1041, which directed the Office of Vital Records of the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to begin providing electronic death records to vital records offices statewide. The improvement to the system allows customers to go to a vital records office in any county (or at the state office), and obtain a certified copy. Currently, the customer has to go to the vital records office in the county where the death was registered or the state office. The public will not be able to access death certificates electronically.

Access is limited to those showing a direct and tangible interest, such as immediate family members.

Outdoor pools’ season extended

Denver Parks and Recreation announced that it will add two extra weeks to the summer outdoor swimming pool season at Congress, Mestizo, Barnum, Berkeley and Eisenhower pools. The season, which was originally scheduled to end on Aug. 12, will now extend to Aug. 26 at those five pools.

Also extended is the special weekend admission program on Saturdays and Sundays where Denver youth under the age of 18 enter for free and Denver adults pay just $1.

Convenio con y sesiones informativas

Centro San Juan Diego, el Instituto Hispano para el cuidado pastoral y familiar de la Arquidiócesis de Denver, ha firmado un convenio de colaboración con la universidad popular autónoma del estado de Puebla a través de su división UPAEP Online para traer su oferta educativa a Centro San Juan Diego.

UPAEP, fundada en 1973, es una institución privada de inspiración católica dirigida por laicos con más de 13 mil estudiantes inscritos. El convenio tiene como objetivo ofrecer cuatro licenciaturas y uno en ingeniería en formato híbrido (en línea, pero con algunas actividades vía video conferencia) a un precio accesible para cualquier persona que tenga el sueño de terminar o realizar su educación universitaria, en español y con todas las ventajas que el método no presencial permite.

Las licenciaturas y la Ingeniería que se ofertarán este otoño son: Administración de Empresas, Administración de Tecnologías de Información, Comercio Internacional, Innovación y Asesoramiento Educativo e Ingeniería en Optimización de Procesos.

Gov. John Hickenlooper announced several Board and Commission appointments to the Developmental Disabilities Council; the Colorado Commission on Higher Education; and the Tony Grampsas Youth Services Board.

Gina Herrera Quintana of Lakewood, to serve as a representative of a state agency that administers funds provided under the federal “Individuals with Disabilities Education Act,” reappointed.
