In Asia
Heir charged with murder: Vorayud Yoovidhaya, an heir to the Red Bull fortune, was arrested and charged with both the death of a police officer and negligence. According to reports, Yoovidhaya admitted to striking the officer’s motorcycle with his Ferrari and fleeing the scene. He has been released on bail.
Typhoons: Typhoons are credited with killing several North Koreans, according to state media. Bolaven and Tembin have damaged farm land and thousands of homes. According to the government, Bolaven has killed 48 people and approximately 170 died this summer from devastating floods.
Quakes hit Philippines: A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Philippines on Aug. 31. The quake forced thousands of people to flee their homes due to a tsunami warning. A second earthquake with a 5.9 magnitude was felt on Monday. No major damage was reported, but one person died because of Friday’s earthquake.
In Europe
Cardinal Martini remembered: Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, 85, had died. Martini is remembered as a progressive in the Catholic Church who was once considered the successor to Pope John Paul II. He served as Archbishop of Milan for over 20 years. Prior to his death, Cardinal Martini wrote in criticism of the Church saying it was “200 years out of date.”
In Latin America
Gov. says no massacre: The Venezuelan government stated that a purported massacre in July of Yanomami Indians by miners is false. The organization on behalf of the Yanomami said that about 80 of its people had died.
Volcano: A volcano known as Fuego spewed lava and ash on Monday in Guatemala. The volcano, which is consistently active, was not a cause for immediate evacuations.
Peace talks: Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos announced the the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia (FARC) will engage in peace talks in Oslo, Norway in October.
In North America
Actor Duncan dies: Michael Clarke Duncan died on Sept. 3, nearly two months after suffering a heart attack. According to reports, Duncan did not completely recover from the heart attack he had in mid-July and experienced a myocardial infarction. He was 54.
Arellano Felix extradited: Eduardo Arellano Felix was in court in San Diego on Tuesday to hear charges against him stemming from alleged drug trafficking, racketeering and money laundering. Authorities say that he is allegedly a leader of the Arellano Felix drug cartel from Mexico. Arellano Felix was extradited to the United States on Sunday.
Torso found: Tourists discovered a torso floating near Niagara Falls in Canada last week. Authorities are investigating the case, which they have said is homicide.
Snow remembered: Snow the polar bear has died at 17 years old, though no immediate cause of death is known. Reid Park Zoo officials are investigating her death. Snow, and her brother Klondike, were born and raised at the Denver Zoo before they were transferred to SeaWorld Orlando. Snow died at Reid Park Zoo in Tucson.
In the Middle East
Headscarf worn on TV: Egyptian TV news presenter Fatima Nabil is the first woman in over 50 years to wear a headscarf on state television. Previously, women were unofficially not allowed to be shown on state television wearing a hijab under ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak’s regime.
