The Arvada Center will open its 2012- 2013 season with “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” directed by Rod A. Lansberry on Tuesday, Sept. 11 running through Sunday, Sept. 30 in the Main Stage Theater. The city of Cortez in Mesa Verde Country invites visitors to attend the 14th Annual Beer Festival, at 4-9 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Parque de Vida in Cortez. It’s a home-grown celebration of local beers to benefit the Montezuma Land Conservancy. Beers from outstanding local microbreweries will be on tap, accompanied by wood-fired pizza, fish tacos and lots of other tasty choices. The music will be local, too, featuring Durango band Jack 10 High and singer-songwriter Katya Chorover. The kids can enjoy games and face painting while the adults browse the extensive silent auction that will include works by local artists, sporting goods, household items and more. One of the Denver Art Museum’s (DAM) longest-running events, the 23rd Annual Friendship Powwow and American Indian Cultural Celebration on Saturday, Sept. 8 will feature American Indian dancers, drum groups, working artists, hands-on activities, vendors and more. The DAM’s Friendship Powwow is a celebration of the vitality of American Indian cultures. Gourd dancing will begin at 10 a.m. with the powwow grand entry at noon. Throughout the day, visitors can watch colorful dance competitions, bead with local artist Denise Litz, paint a Hopi tile with artists Crow Medina and Grams Castro, work with Walt Pourier of the Strong Hold Society on a community mural or enjoy their first (or 101st!) piece of fry bread. Aurora Shots for Tots and Teens will celebrate its 10th anniversary at the program’s free and low-cost vaccine clinic from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 8 at Aurora Fire Station #2 (12600 Hoffman Blvd.). In addition to offering free and low-cost vaccines for children 0-18 years, the celebratory clinic will feature face painting, service dogs, balloon twisting, prizes, cake and tours of fire engines and ambulances. On Saturday, Sept. 8 the City of Englewood and Freedom Service Dogs present the 5th Annual Festival of the Bastardino – A Celebration of Mixed Heritage Dogs. Pirates Cove Aquatic Center and Belleview Park are going to the dogs (and their families)! The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is located at 1225 West Belleview Avenue.
