I would like the opportunity to express my opinion on immigration reform, from my perspective as a small business owner.
As a small business owner, I am in strong support of immigration reform. Not only is it the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do from a business perspective. Fixing our broken system will help small business owners like myself more easily tap into the immigrant labor workforce, make our existing workforces more stable and help aspiring immigrants become entrepreneurs.
A scientific opinion poll conducted by Small Business Majority found 84 percent of small business owners support a bipartisan Senate proposal that would overhaul the system. Three-quarters believe we’re better off letting undocumented workers become legal taxpayers so they can pay their fair share, and strong majorities believe it’s important to let more high and low-skilled foreign workers into our country to help strengthen our workforce.
Immigrants are twice as likely to start businesses as U.S born citizens; it makes absolutely no sense that we limit opportunities for motivated individuals or stifle our workforces by denying business owners the ability to choose from a diversified group of workers. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree the system needs to be fixed. It’s time they put partisan differences aside and put their words into action.
