La Voz Bilingüe has named Areina Naranjo as the 2016-17 La Voz Student of the Week Scholarship recipient. “Our 11-year old program continues to attract Colorado’s top students during their path to great success,” said La Voz Publisher, Pauline Rivera.
Naranjo will be awarded a $1,500 Scholarship sponsored by Denver7 (KMGH-TV, the ABC affiliate). Naranjo recently graduated from Union Colony Preparatory High School in Greeley and will be attending the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall.
Aside from graduating with an incredible GPA, Naranjo is involved in community and coordinates various projects which include fundraising to pay for tetanus shots for women in undeveloped countries. She also tutors children and has created heart pillows for recovering cardiac patients. She has also volunteered at Pregnancy Resource Center and the Weld Food Bank.
With a strong sense of community, Naranjo offers, “Community involvement is important because I feel that a community can only thrive and succeed if the people living in it, support it. No one should care more about the community than the people living in it. If I can help anyone in need, there is no reason for me not to help, because at any point I could be the one in need of a helping hand.”
Naranjo plans to pursue a major in neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Naranjo is an shining example of a well-rounded student whose combination of achieving high academics and involvement in community will guide her path to success.
