Colorado’s new sports hero

In a state rich with championship venues, Colorado fans have found a new sports star. This past weekend Colorado fans saw a sports icon depart in Rod Smith and another emerge in Michael “Mike” Alvarado. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mike Alvarado, La Voz was afforded the opportunity to speak with him before his bout against Cesar Bazan.

La Voz: When did you begin your boxing career?

Alvarado: I began wrestling at Skyview High School.

La Voz: Whose boxing style do you most emulate?

Alvarado: I’d have to say Oscar De La Hoya. I like to box my opponents and break them down.

La Voz: What do you love most about the sport?

Alvarado: I have a passion (for boxing) and love the hard work, and the payoff. I enjoy performing in front of my fans and showcasing my talents and skills that I’m blessed to have.

La Voz: What do you do to get yourself mentally prepared for a fight?

Alvarado: I block out everything and focus on the fight and my opponent.

La Voz: What is your most memorable fight?

Alvarado: It would probably have to by my last fight, he was a tough upcoming prospect and he had a good record too.

La Voz: How important do you think boxing is for the State of Colorado?

Alvarado: It’s very important, right now Colorado doesn’t have the atmosphere or support for boxing, and I want to change that. I want to change the boxing game in Colorado.

La Voz: What advice would you give to young adults who are interested in joining the sport?
