Novalima’s Peruvian rhythms will move you

Novalima produces a mix of African rhythms and Peruvian musical styles of a highly contagious nature. The infection makes its victims rise from their chairs and begin to dance when or wherever they may be. It makes the funk bubble up within them, starting deep down in their toes and traveling up through their hips and waist. Finally this pleasant affectation will travel to the tips of their snapping fingers, causing their heads to bob up and down. Recovery is rare.

The band formed in 2001 around a quartet of Peruvian musicians – Rámon Pérez Prieto, Grimaldo Del Solar, Rafael Morales and Carlos Li Carillo. The four went to high school together in Lima. By the time the band began its inception they were scattered about the globe in Barcelona, Hong Kong, London as well as Lima. They started by emailing song ideas to each other, resulting in their self-titled 2002 release. The album’s reception went far beyond anyone’s expectations, which led to another disc in 2006 involving more Afro-Peruvian musicians and titled Afro. This release spent 10 weeks at #1 on the US College Music Journal’s Latin Alternative and New World radio charts.

The four founders have since returned to Lima and invited some of their favorite local performers to join the group, such as Juan Medina Cotito, Mangüe Vasquez, Milagros Guerrero, Marcos Mosquera and Constantino Alvarez.

On their new release, made available just last week, they have taken their mix of African soul and rhythms combined with the melodies and instrumentation of Europe and the Andes to a new level likely to create a musical pandemic among fans of Latin jazz, soulful funk and world beat around the globe.
