Patriotic holidays, also known as Fiestas Patrias, are made to observe the independence of several Latin American countries. One of the most notable observances is that of Mexico’s independence from Spain. In fact, there are several events lined up for the weekend prior to the date that will take place in recognition of the Mexico’s holiday – which may or may not be directly related.
Locally, the most recognizable event is the Fiestas Patrias held at Civic Center Park in Downtown Denver. This year, it will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13. Similar to previous years, it is an all day event featuring carnival rides with stage performances this year from Los Cuates de Sinaloa, Dareyes de la Sierra, Los Hurracanes del Norte, Conjunto Atardecer and El Compa Chuy. And, as is tradition, the Consul General of Mexico in Denver, Eduardo Arnal, will deliver a brief message. The formal ceremony is set to start at 4 p.m. at the amphitheatre stage.
For those of you looking to be active participants during these festivities, you can sign up for the 16th Annual El Grito 5k Run/Walk taking place on Sunday, Sept. 13 starting and ending at 10th Ave. & Osage St. at the Buckhorn Exchange. The race is in benefit for scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are active in cross country/ track and who are pursuing a higher education.
Information about registering for the event is available at active.com or at elgrito5k.org.
While the magnitude of these festivities may not mirror those of the Cinco de Mayo events, the September 16 celebrations are considered an important entity not only for Mexican nationals who have immigrated to the United States, but for the local community that values the importance of the Mexican culture.
