Born in Nebraska, Ramirez eventually moved to Cheyenne then to Denver. After high school he attended Adams State College, the University of Wyoming then eventually enrolled at Metropolitan State College of Denver. He dropped out and began devoting his time to dance and the arts. He joined the Crusade for Justice and then taught arts and dance at Escuela Tlatelolco from the late 70’s to the mid 80’s. He worked at various jobs with murals and graphic design. He began working for Servicios de Laraza for the next 16 years and remained there until 2003. Ramirez was instrumental in starting the HIV program at Servicios, also working with other programs such as Adult Employee Training, Emergency Service and Seniors, Inc. Ramirez pursued a masters in ballet folklorico dance study both in Mexico and the U.S. In 1987 Ramirez became the Artistic Director of Grupo Folklorico Sabor Latino, Inc., a nonprofit group that teaches dance and performs professionally. Ramirez has been a faculty member of many DPS schools and currently teaches dance at duo-language Academia Ana Marie Sandoval in North Denver, CMS Community and University Hills Elementary School in Boulder. Through his career in folklorico dance, Ramirez has been the recipient of many community service awards. He currently sits on the Servicios de Laraza board. During his free time Ramirez and lifetime partner Dr. Steve Marshall, enjoy traveling and spending time with family.
About Grupo Folklorico Sabor Latino, Inc.
The Denver based dance group preserves and performs, at a professional level, the dances that reflect Mexico’s regions and cultures. The group is the recipient of the 1998 Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the 1997 Denver Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship Award for Dance Choreography.
